Portsmouth

Portsmouth is the birthplace of Charles Dickens, and has been home to many literary giants.

Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the first two Holmes stories while practicing as a doctor in Southsea and the Conan Doyle Collection maintains his legacy there. Kipling has his own blue plaque in his boyhood home also in Southsea. H.G. Wells did his apprenticeship at a St. Paul’s Road drapery shop in his mid-teens.

More recently, Neil Gaiman was born in nearby Portchester and has a street named in his honour; The Ocean at the End of the Lane. His graphic novels, Violent Cases and The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr. Punch are set in the area as well.

In other media, local boy Peter Sellers has a blue plaque on Castle Road

The Doctor Who episode Revelation of the Daleks was filmed at IBM’s North Harbour Building
